次の提案： 1756行thayの写本の読み方は次行のhys と対立していて、オリジナルにおいてfareはfereであったはずである。 (この詩の別の箇所では 463行目　dere/fere, 1425行目 here/fere/ のような同韻語の綴り字形式が見出される。） このことからfere はspereと 韻を踏んでいたのだろうと推断する。 spere はspare の南西ミッドランド形式である。 この方言形式はその後の写字生達には見聞きなれない言葉であったかも知れず 改悪を引き起こした。同様に 写本している時点で三人称複数であると考えしかもこの形式 thay に訳すことに慣れていたある写字生によって thayはheの代わりに書き入れられたかもしれない。 their の修正形式でこの詩行の解釈は "He will excuse that ,[namely] to have a lover for his spouse"
